The paper concerns the measurement of the position of a target point in space by means of several angle-measuring optical instruments. Using statistical analysis it derives an error function which gives expected measurement error as a function of the number of instruments used, their qualities, and their locations. Properties of the error function are discussed, and it is shown how the model may be employed to find good solutions to instrument location problems. Finally, it is pointed out that the same approach may be applied to location problems involving instruments of arbitrary type which measure parameters different from those treated here.
