Abstract
A thermal-electric effect that modulates the absorption of a dichroic dye-smectic A mixture and a display based on such an effect are described. The physical principles behind the optical and thermal performance, the memory effect, addressing schemes, and other major practical issues related to the display's operation are discussed. Experimental data and typical values for various display parameters are presented.
