Abstract
The field of all-optical signal processing has matured to the point that prototype devices are now being built. The development of this field, which has potential advantages over electronic processing for certain applications, depends critically on the availability of nonlinear materials that work at relatively high speed and low power. This requirement raises interesting scientificquestions and challenges the existing technology.
