Abstract
A method is presented for the routine fabrication and testing of freestanding wire grids with large apertures for the Cosmic Back-ground Explorer (COBE) Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) experiment. Design criteria and performance specifications are discussed. Test and characterization results are also included that indicate that these wire grids are quite rugged and can withstand the rigors of qualification for spaceflight use.
