Abstract
A simplified theoretical analysis based on the step-index planar waveguide model of the mode extinction modulator is presented. The influence of the attenuation of the guided mode is explored experimentally. Two kinds of modulators are fabricated and investigated. The mode-to-mode coupling at region boundaries is found to be dominant for the operation of the device.
