The determination of the position of an image inside a complex scene by means of correlation is sometimes difficult owing to the appearance of spurious peaks. When the lateral peaks are lower than the central correlation, they can be eliminated simply by binarizing the output plane by a threshold function. However, if this is not the case, we have to use special filter designs, which suffer from such difficulties as a low optical efficiency. In this paper we present a new possibility for eliminating the lateral peaks through the combined action of several filters that can be used to correct the problem in a wide range of situations.
