Optical design methodology for a dual-beam combiner head-up display (HUD) is discussed. It has been shown that binocular disparity and image doubling are the deciding factors for image quality for such systems and not resolution. Consequently there should be much tighter control over aberrations in such systems than otherwise dictated by resolution requirement only. An actual dual-beam combiner HUD is designed and various plots describing its performance are shown. This system is almost diffraction limited as dictated by the requirement of strict control over binocular disparity and image doubling.
