A simple method for measuring the outer diameter of an optical fiber is presented. The method is based on observing the interference of light reflected in the fiber–air interfaces of a fiber side illuminated by a laser beam at oblique incidence. This technique is easy to implement and could be used for real-time monitoring of fiber diameter during fiber drawing.
