The mechanism of colliding pulse mode locking in solid-state lasers based on the fluctuation model is discussed. A microphysical picture and mathematical expression of the particle number grating are given. The growth processes of mode-locked light pulses are simulated and the output characteristics of mode locking as functions of operating parameters are obtained.
