Abstract
A novel analytical model is provided to evaluate the performance of subcarrier modulated optical heterodyne frequency modulation (FM) using a distributed feedback (DFB) laser with nonuniform FM response taking into account the combined effect of laser phase noise and receiver noise. Two different subcarrier signals, viz. minimum shift keying (MSK) and biphase, are used for direct frequency modulation of the DFB laser diode. The modified Monte-Carlo simulation of the system using the ‘‘importance sampling’’ technique is also carried out. The MSK subcarrier modulated optical FM is found to counteract effectively the degrading effect of nonuniform FM response leaving only a small penalty of 0.2 dB and provides better performance than biphase frequency shift keying.
