Abstract
Formulas are derived for finite ray tracing through diffractive optical elements (DOEs). These formulas take a simple, Snell’s-law-like form, yet they are completely general, and can be applied to different types of diffractive lenses, including holographic optical elements and binary optical elements, which can be formed on surfaces of arbitrary shape. Additional formulas are developed for the calculation of wave aberrations introduced by the DOEs, and for pseudo-paraxial ray tracing through DOEs, which is used to determine the first-order properties of the system such as the Gaussian image position.
