Abstract
The solid angle aperture of highly multimode rectangular step-index waveguides is calculated with mode theory and geometrical optics. There is a difference between the results of the two different approaches, the geometrical optics aperture is larger and includes the aperture obtained from mode theory. A possible cause for this discrepancy is discussed.
