Abstract
The response of interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG) sensing coils to a time-varying, axial thermal gradient (ATG) is investigated. Sensing coils wound with Panda polarization-maintaining fibers in straight and quadrupolar wind configurations developed in our earlier study examining the effect of time-varying, radial thermal gradients (RTG) are used with similar arrangement and experimental setup. Induced gyroscope bias drift, measured as a function of temperature and time, is presented and correlated for both winding configurations using our earlier model. Our results show that the quadrupolar wind is more susceptible to an ATG than a RTG. Moreover, although an ATG is exclusively introduced, a small residual RTG is still present and has a relatively large effect on the straight wind coil.
