Power conversion efficiency of various erbium-doped fibers is characterized at a wavelength of 1585 nm and at a pump wavelength of 1480 nm by using a two stage amplifier and a C-band amplified spontaneous emission filter. There is good agreement between experiment and simulation. Trade-off exists between erbium doping concentration and pair-induced quenching. High Al doping and optimization of numerical apertures can help improve the efficiency, and the erbium doping region has a significant impact on the performance of low cutoff erbium-doped fibers.
