Abstract
Recently a new class of wavelet-image coding techniques has appeared based on an embedded technique. We compare the quality of test images reconstructed using the well-known set partitioning technique (SpiHT), trellis coded quantization using context-based coding (TCQCB), and classical wavelet method (scalar quantization and entropy coding). The performance of the TCQCB method is better in rate distortion sense than the performance of the SPIHT method. The reconstructed images obtained with the SPIHT method, however, give better visual impressions than the reconstructed images obtained using both the trellis context based method and the classical wavelet based method.
