Quality control by artificial vision is undergoing rapid evolution thanks to recent progress in many fields. The perception of machine vision is augmented by a new kind of data provided by nonconventional imaging acquisition, such as multispectral or polarization imaging, which brings a rich information for characterizing the appearance of manufactured objects. Perception is also augmented by new three-dimensional (3-D) acquisition concepts, where latest RGB-D or light field cameras are very promising for modeling and measuring the shapes of objects produced by industries. On the other hand, frame rate and camera resolution generated a large amount of data, where big data sciences are welcome to manage them. Alongside these aspects, artificial intelligence and deep learning networks change the traditional approaches proposed for many years in image processing and artificial vision. The big data produced by machine vision can directly be analyzed by artificial intelligence networks without any other step. The first results obtained in recent years are very impressive, and expectations are high for increasing the capabilities of machine vision for quality control.
This special section will address new and original works with regard to quality control by artificial vision. This special section is based on the 15th Conference Quality Control by Artificial Vision 2019 (QCAV 2019), which be held May 15-17, 2019, in Mulhouse, France ( It will be constituted of some extended versions of the selected best papers of QCAV 2019 after the review process. But this special section is also open to any other submissions within the scope of quality control by artificial vision. The guest editors expect papers describing novel theoretical, experimental, and applied work in image processing and computer vision for industrial applications.
Papers are solicited in the following topics:

  • Image acquisition, vision sensors, machine vision, 3-D machine vision (stereovision, laser triangulation, multi-cameras, time of flight, RGB-D camera, etc.)
  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning or deep learning applied to computer vision and/or quality control Nonconventional imaging (holography, polarimetric imaging, light-field and plenoptic imaging), x-ray, ultrasound, therahertz, and other imaging modalities
  • Big data approaches for managing databases of images
  • Image analysis, geometrical description, segmentation, image processing, image interpretation and pattern recognition, image analysis and geometrical description
  • Nondestructive testing and metrology, process automation, characterization and control, nondestructive testing and metrology
  • Vision and robotic, vision for autonomous vehicles, automatic guided vehicles, unmanned ground and aerial vehicles
  • Automation of images analysis in medicine, biology, and botanics
  • Low-level vision and image processing, hardware and real-time processing, parallel processing

Manuscripts should conform to the author guidelines of the Journal of Electronic Imaging. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their manuscript through the online submission system at The special section should be mentioned in the cover letter. Each manuscript will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Peer review will commence immediately upon manuscript submission, with a goal of making a first decision within 6 weeks. Each paper is published as soon as the copyedited and typeset proofs are approved by the author.
