Abstract
A pulsed ruby laser is used with the techniques of holographic interferometry to record stress waves and cracks propagating in two and three-dimensional specimens. The problems discussed include the development of surface waves from a buried explosive source, the effects of surface discontinuities on surface waves, geometric effects from multiple explosions, the observation of propagating cracks from an explosive source, and the determination of dynamic stress intensity factors. The examples demonstrate the utility of the holographic method in problems with dynamic loads.
