Abstract
This overview paper was presented at the 1981 Conference on Conical Optical Element Metrology. It briefly discusses the definition and history of conical elements, the Air Force's interest in them, and the nomenclature for elements used in cylindrical resonators. The histories of fabrication, polishing, and coating programs for these elements are mentioned to provide perspective for the varied metrology papers presented at the conference. Metrology uses and goals in Air Force programs are listed, and metrology capabilities at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory are summarized.
