Abstract
Visible and infrared extinction in falling snow is a function of snow particle concentration and snow crystal size and shape. Relationships between existing meteorological conditions and these characteristics have been investigated using measurements made during the SNOW-ONE (Scenario Normalization for Operation in Winter-Obscuration and the Natural Environment) Field Experiment. Effects of meteorological conditions upon extinction are discussed, and empirical models are suggested. Causes of the variation of extinction with wavelength in the visible and infrared are identified, and the magnitudes of some of the possible effects are estimated.
