Abstract
Optical fiber sensors are of great and increasing interest for the measurement of physical parameters such as acoustic and electro-magnetic fields. The germane fiber properties, namely, ruggedness, small size, and dielectric construction, are, however, equally desirable for industrial and laboratory mechanical metrology. This review contains a classification of the types of metrological sensors possible with fibers, including applications to measurement of submicroscopic to kilometer dimensions.
