The development of ‘‘smart’’ materials and structures has been underway for several decades. These intelligent materials and structural systems typically incorporate internal mechanisms for sensing, signal processing, and actuation. Future applications will likely include civil infrastructure monitoring, biomedicine, aerospace, hydrospace, and other uses where periodic self-examination and adaptability may be important. In the field of smart structures and materials, scientists often disagree on what makes materials or structures ‘‘intelligent.’’
