Abstract
We propose a simple skeletonization method for gray-scale fringe patterns. The proposed method is based on the gradient vector field (GVF) of a given image. We establish an appropriate complex-valued cost function using a second-order oriented partial differential equation for calculating the GVF, in which the fringe orientation can act as a powerful aid to perfect the process. We test the proposed method on numerically simulated and experimentally obtained fringe patterns, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs effectively.
