The speckle correlations in the light scattered from a volume disordered dielectric medium are studied theoretically. A scalar wave treatment is used for the motion of the light in the system, and the dielectric constant of the volume disordered medium is taken to be of the form (epsilon) (vector r) equals (epsilon) ((omega) ) plus (delta) (epsilon) (vector r), where (epsilon) ((omega) ) is a homogeneous isotropic frequency- dependent dielectric constant and (delta) (epsilon) (vector r) is a zero-mean Gaussian random process. A diagrammatic perturbation theory approach is used to compute the speckle correlation function defined by C(vector q, vector kvector q', vector k') equals <{I(vector qvector k) - [I(vector qvector k)]} {I(vector q'vector k') - [I(vector q'vector k')]}> where I(vector qvector k) is proportional to the differential scattering coefficient for the elastic scattering of light of incident wavevector vector k into light of wavevector vector q. Contributions associated with ladder, maximally crossed, and more complicated higher order diagrams are summed in the determination of the speckle correlation function. In addition we make the approximation of including only s- scattering in the evaluation of the various diagrams contributing to the speckle correlation function. Results are presented for C(vector q, vector kvector q', vector k') in the approximation C equals C⁽¹) plus C⁽¹⁰) plus C^(1.5) where C⁽¹), C⁽¹⁰) and C^(1.5) are terms arising from three distinct classes of diagrams. The contribution C⁽¹), which contains the memory and time-reversed memory effect terms, has been studied before and is proportional to (delta) (vector q minus vector k minus vector q' plus vector k'). C⁽¹⁰) is a new term (of the same order of magnitude as C⁽¹)) in the scattering of light from volume disorder which is found to be proportional to (delta) (vector q minus vector k plus vector q' minus vector k'). C^(1.5) is a new term in the scattering of light from volume disorder which exhibits an unrestricted dependence on vector q, vector k, vector q', vector k' and a series of interesting intensity peaks related to the resonant scattering of light by the volume disorder. The contributions C⁽¹⁰) and C^(1.5) have been considered in the study of the speckle correlation function for the scattering of light from rough surfaces, but this is the first consideration of these terms in the scattering of light from volume disorder.

The speckle correlations in the light scattered from a volume disordered dielectric medium consisting of a random array of dielectric spheres are studied using computer simulation techniques. The random medium is formed by placing dielectric spheres of radius R and dielectric constant (epsilon) randomly on the vertices of a simple cubic lattice, so that a fixed fraction (rho) of the vertices is occupied by the spheres. The region outside the spheres is vacuum, and the radius of the spheres is assumed to be much smaller than the lattice constant of the cubic lattice. For simplicity the electromagnetic fields are treated in a scalar wave approximation. The scalar wave field equations of this system are integrated numerically to determine the scattered fields, and these fields are used to calculate the speckle correlation function defined by C(vector q, vector kvector q', vector k') equals <{I(vector qvector k) - [I(vector qvector k)]} {I(vector q'vector k') - [I(vector q'vector k')]}>, where I(vector qvector k) is proportional to the differential scattering coefficient for the elastic scattering of light of wavevector vector k into light of wavevector vector q. In implementing our computer simulation we have considered a 9 X 9 X 9 cubic lattice that is occupied by 178 dielectric spheres of dielectric constant (epsilon) equals 9. The lattice constant a of the cubic lattice was taken to satisfy a/(lambda) equals 0.7 where (lambda) is the wavelength of the light in vacuum, and the radius of the dielectric spheres was taken such that R equals 0.0159 (lambda) . Results are presented for C(vector q, vector kvector q', vector k') in the approximation C equals C⁽¹) plus C⁽¹⁰) plus C^(1.5), where C⁽¹), C⁽¹⁰) and C^(1.5) are terms arising from three distinct scattering processes. The enhanced backscattering of light from randomly rough metal surfaces, which manifests itself as a well-defined peak in the retroreflection direction in the angular distribution of the intensity of the light scattered incoherently has attracted a great deal of attention recently. The backscattering phenomenon is attributed to the coherent interference of multiply-scattered surface plasmon polaritons excited on a metal surface with their time-reversed partners. The coherent interference of multiply-scattered lateral waves excited in the scattering of light from strongly rough dielectric surfaces is known to lead to an enhanced backscattering peak in the angular distribution of the intensity of s-polarized light scattered from them. In this paper we present an analytical theory of the scattering of light from a one- dimensional randomly rough interface between two media. One of the media is a dipole-active medium that is characterized by a frequency-dependent dielectric function, that is negative in a restricted frequency range, while the other is characterized by a frequency-independent, real, positive dielectric constant. We assume that the interface profile function is a single-valued function of the coordinate in the mean plate of the interface that is normal to its grooves and ridges, and constitutes a zero-mean, stationary, Gaussian random process. We assume that either p- or s-polarized electromagnetic waves are incident on the interface from the medium whose dielectric constant is frequency-independent. We study the angular distribution of the light that has been scattered incoherently as a function of the frequency of the incident light. The evolution of the enhanced backscattering peak in the case of p-polarized incident light as the frequency of the incident light is tuned through the frequencies of the dipole-active excitations in the medium whose dielectric function is frequency-dependent, is studied. Different mechanisms for the formation of the enhanced backscattering peak in different frequency regions are discussed.

It is generally believed that the enhanced backscattering of light from a highly reflecting, multiply-scattering, random surface is due to the coherent interference of each multiply- reflected optical path with its time-reversed partner, and is already present in the double- scattering approximation. If enhanced backscattering is indeed a multiple-scattering effect we should see it from any random surface that can multiply scatter light. The statistical properties of the surface, such as whether the surface profile function is a Gaussianly-distributed random variable or not, whether it is stationary or not, and the form of the surface height correlation function, should therefore be of secondary importance in determining whether enhanced backscattering occurs or not. In this paper we study the role played by the form of the surface height correlation function in the existence of enhanced backscattering and in the dependence on the scattering angle of the contribution to the mean differential reflection coefficient from the incoherent component of the scattered light. We consider the scattering of p- and s- polarized beams of light incident normally onto a random, one-dimensional metallic surface, when the plane of incidence is perpendicular to the generators of the surface. Four different forms of the surface height power spectrum g(Q) are considered: (a) g(Q) equals (pi) a exp(-Qa); (b) g(Q) equals (pi) 1/2a exp(-Q2a2/4); (c) g(Q) equals 2a[1 - (Qa/(pi) )](theta) ((pi) - Qa); and (d) g(Q) equals a(theta) ((pi) - Qa), where we have presented them in the order of increasing rate of decay to zero with increasing Q. In these expressions (theta) (Q) is the Heaviside unit step function. For each form of g(Q) we have calculated the mean value of , the distance between consecutive peaks and valleys on the surface and the variance of this quantity, (sigma) d equals [2> - 2]1/2. The values of these quantities are correlated with the rate of decay of g(Q) with increasing Q. For a fixed values of the wavelength of the incident light we then calculate the contribution to the mean differential reflection coefficient from the incoherent component of the scattered light when the value of a in case (b) above is varied in such a way that (lambda) / increases systematically, with the rms slope held constant. Enhanced backscattering is observed in each case. The width of the enhanced backscattering peak is related to the value of (lambda) /, as is the occurrence of first order subsidiary maxima. The latter disappear when (lambda) / has increased to about 0.6. This is interpreted as due to the inability of the incident light to resolve the structure of the surface responsible for these subsidiary maxima. Similar calculations are carried out for a band-limited fractal surface, characterized by g(Q) equals ((pi) a/tan-1Qoa)(theta) (Qo - Q)/(1 + a2Q2), and similar results are obtained. No evidence of second order subsidiary maxima is seen in the differential reflection coefficient. This result is believed to be due to the magnitude of (sigma) d/ for each of the forms of g(Q) considered. We conclude that while the detailed form of the mean differential reflection coefficient depends on the form of the surface height correlation function, the existence of enhanced backscattering does not, as long as the surface remains multiply reflecting.
