Profile Summary

Graduated in Physics from the University of Porto, Portugal (1990), Master of Science degree (with honours) in Physics - Applied Optics from University of Kent, Canterbury, UK (1992), Ph.D. degree in Physics from University of Porto, in collaboration with Univ. of Kent, UK (1997), and recently, the D.Sc. (Habilitation)) in Physics from University of Porto, Portugal (2013). He has also an Executive-MBA from Católica Porto Business School (former EGE-Atlantic Business School), of Portuguese Catholic University (2011).

From 1990-98 he was Researcher of Center of Applied Photonics at INESC-TEC, Portugal, working on fiber optic sensing technologies. From 1996-1997 he was Technical Consultant at Group Quintas & Quintas S.A. From 1998-1999, he worked as a Project Manager at the R&D Division of ENT S.A. (EFACEC Group Corp.). In January 2001, co-founded Multiwave Networks Inc., California, USA, and in May, of the same year, he became also Director of Product Development and later Director of Operations of Multiwave Networks Portugal, Lda., Maia, Portugal (later on Multiwave Photonics S.A. owned by other investors). On 2005 he was Managing Director and co-owner of BlueSpan – Intelligent Solutions of Electronics and Telecomunications, Lda. From 2006-2007 he became external Consultant of Multiwave Photonics S.A, and from 2008-2009 became Project & Product Marketing Manager of the company, leading the development of new fiber laser sources for Medical and Industrial Imaging Applications. Member of the Board-of-Directors (BoD) of ENOTECA Lda. (2008-2013).

At the present, he is Full Professor of Physics, Biophysics & Medical Technology at the University Fernando Pessoa, Porto, Portugal. He is also Scientific Expert/Adviser of European Commission (DG Photonics - Unit 4) and of HaEDA (Brussels, Belgium) and of several national and international companies working on advanced fiber optic and photonics technologies Industrial and Biomedical markets.
