Efficient data transmission is an important part of satellite communication, particularly when large data volumes need to be downlinked to the Earth. One general approach to dealing with this dilemma is data compression, either lossless or lossy. For hyperspectral data, compression is specifically crucial due to its high inter-band spectral correlation, resulting from the use of hundreds of high spectral resolution bands for data collection. This paper develops a new approach, called progressive band selection (PBS), to achieve both data compression and data transmission, in the sense that data can be compressed and transmitted progressively. First, PBS prioritizes each spectral band by assigning a priority score based on its information content measured by a certain criterion. Then, bands are selected progressively according to the priority scores assigned to each spectral band. Consequently, data can be compressed and transmitted in a progressive fashion to meet the application's requirements; this task cannot be accomplished by most data compression techniques. Most importantly, PBS can be implemented in two opposite manners. One is forward progressive band selection (FPBS), which starts with a low number of bands and gradually improves data quality by including more bands progressively, based on their priority scores, until data quality is satisfactory. The other is backward progressive band selection (BPBS), which begins with a high number of spectral bands and progressively removes them in accordance with their priority scores, until data quality falls below a given tolerance level. In order to determine the lower and upper bounds on the number of bands used for FPBS and BPBS, we use a recently developed concept called virtual dimensionality (VD). We demonstrate the utility of PBS in compression and transmission for satellite communication with an experiment in land use and cover classification, which uses a dataset collected by the Hyperion instrument aboard NASA's EO-1 satellite.

Component Analysis (CA) has found many applications in remote sensing image processing. Two major component analyses are of particular interest, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) which have been widely used in signal processing. While the PCA de-correlates data samples via 2nd order statistics in a set of Principal Components (PCs), the ICA represents data samples via statistical independency in a set of statistically Independent Components (ICs). However, in order to for component analyses to be effective, the number of components to be generated, p must be sufficient for data analysis. Unfortunately, in MultiSpectral Imagery (MSI) p seems to be small, while p in HyperSpectral Imagery (HSI) seems too large. Interestingly, very little has been reported on how to deal with this issue when p is too small or too large. This paper investigates this issue. When p is too small, two approaches are developed to mitigate the problem. One is Band Expansion Process (BEP) which augments original data band dimensionality by producing additional bands via a set of nonlinear functions. The other is a kernel-based approach, referred to as Kernel-based PCA (K-PCA) which maps features in the original data space to a higher dimensional feature space via a set of nonlinear kernel. While both approaches make attempts to resolve the issue of a small p using a set of nonlinear functions, their design rationales are completely different, particularly they are not correlated. As for a large p such as HSI, a recently developed Virtual Dimensionality (VD) can be used for this purpose where the VD was originally developed to estimate number of spectrally distinct signatures. If we assume one spectrally distinct signature can be accommodated by one component, the value of p can be actually determined by the VD. Finally, experiments are conducted to explore and evaluate the utility of component analyses, specifically, PCA and ICA using BEP and K-PCA for MSI and VD for HSI.

Under the U.S. Army sponsored Joint Service Agent Water Monitor (JSAWM) program, developing hand-held assays using tickets for chemical/biological agent detection has been of major interest. One of keys to success is to develop detection algorithms that not only can effectively detect the presence of various agents, but also can quantify the detected agents. This paper presents a recent development of detection software that can perform 3-dimensional (3D) receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis which is based on quantified agent concentration. The ROC curves have been widely used in communications, signal processing and medical communities to evaluate the effectiveness of a detection technique. It generally formulates a signal detection problem as a binary composite hypothesis testing problem with the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis represents the case of no signal and the case of signal presence respectively. The ROC curve is then plotted based on the detection probability (power) P_D versus the false alarm probability, P_F. Unfortunately, such a two-dimensional (2D) (P_D,P_F)-based ROC curve does not factor in the concentration detected in an agent signal which is a crucial parameter in chemical/biological agent detection. The proposed 3D ROC analysis is developed from such a need. It includes an additional parameter, referred to as threshold t, which is used to threshold the detected agent signal concentration. Consequently, a different value of t results in a different 2D ROC curve. In order to take into account the thresholding factor t, a 3D ROC curve is derived and plotted based on three parameters, (P_D,P_F,t). As a result of the 3D ROC curve, three 2D ROC curves can be also derived. One is the conventional 2D (P_D,P_F)-ROC curve. Another is a 2D (P_D,t)-ROC curve which describes the relationship between P_D and the threshold value t. A third one is a 2D (P_F,t)-ROC curve which shows the effect of the threshold value t on P_F. The utility of the proposed 3D ROC analysis will be demonstrated by the detection software developed by the UMBC for the tickets used in HHA for water monitoring.
