As a Professor of Biomedical Image Analysis, Pattern Recognition, Machine/Deep Learning, and Information/Data Analytics at Sorbonne University and Principal Investigator at the Paris Brain Institute within the INRIA "Aramis" team-project, my work focuses on computational histopathology (including integrative approaches), microscopic biomedical image analysis, machine and deep learning, and pattern recognition, with a focus on explainable artificial intelligence.
Before transitioning to academia, I served as Project Manager at General Electric Energy Products – Europe. I became an Associate Professor at the University of Besançon in 1999, along with a Research Fellowship at the FEMTO-ST Institute (CNRS UMR 6174).
From 2009 to 2015, I was a Professor at the National University of Singapore, where I directed the CNRS International Joint Research Unit "IPAL" from 2008 to 2014. I organized the first international digital pathology challenge at ICPR 2012 and a second event on breast cancer histology in 2024. I co-founded the European Society of Digital Integrative Pathology (ESDIP), serving as Vice-President (2016-2018), President (2018-2020), and Advisory Board member (since 2020). I have been actively involved in organizing the European Conference of Digital Pathology (ECDP) since its inception as a biennial, and later, annual event.
At Sorbonne University (formerly Pierre and Marie Curie University), I co-led a research team at the Bioimaging Lab (LIB), co-directed the B.Sc. Minor in Innovation in Public Health, and served on the inaugural Executive Board of the University Institute of Health Engineering. I also held an Exceptional Professorship at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (2016-2018), where I successfully chaired MICCAI 2020 in Lima, Peru. From 2018 to 2022, I served on the MICCAI Board of Directors, contributing to the organization of several MICCAI conferences.
