With its broad spatial coverage and fine temporal resolution, ocean color remote sensing data represents an effective tool for monitoring large areas of ocean, and has the potential to provide crucial information in coastal waters where routine monitoring is either lacking or unsatisfactory. The semi-analytical or empirical algorithms that work well in Case 1 waters encounter many problems in offshore areas where the water is often optically complex and presents difficulties for atmospheric correction. Zhejiang is one of the most developed provinces in eastern China, and its adjacent seas have been greatly affected by recent rapid economic development. Various islands and semi-closed bays along the Zhejiang coast promote the formation of muddy tidal flats. Moreover, large quantities of terrestrial substances coming down with the Yangtze River and other local rivers also have a great impact on the coastal waters of the province. MODIS, VIIRS and GOCI are three commonly used ocean color sensors covering the East China Sea. Several ocean color products such as remote-sensing reflectance (R_rs) and the concentrations of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM) of the above three sensors on the Zhejiang coast have been evaluated. Cloud-free satellite images with synchronous field measurements taken between 2012 and 2015 were used for comparison. It is shown that there is a good correlation between the MODIS and GOCI spectral data, while some outliers were found in the VIIRS images. The low signal-to-noise ratio at short wavelengths in highly turbid waters also reduced the correlation between different sensors. In addition, it was possible to obtain more valid data with GOCI in shallow waters because of the use of an appropriate atmospheric correction algorithm. The standard Chl-a and TSM products of the three satellites were also evaluated, and it was found that the Chl-a and TSM concentrations calculated by the OC3G and Case 2 algorithms, respectively, were more suitable for use in the study area. Moreover, GOCI has been proved to be effective for monitoring the diurnal dynamics in coastal waters, and the concentration of TSM had a good negative correlation with water level. Overall, compared with MODIS and VIIRS, GOCI is more effective for monitoring the fine changes and diurnal dynamics in the seas adjacent to Zhejiang Province.

The sea surface salinity (SSS) can be measured from space by using L-band (1.4 GHz) microwave radiometers. The L-band has been chosen for its sensitivity of brightness temperature to the change of salinity. However, SSS remote sensing is still challenging due to the low sensitivity of brightness temperature to SSS variation: for the vertical polarization, the sensitivity is about 0.4 to 0.8 K/psu with different incident angles and sea surface temperature; for horizontal polarization, the sensitivity is about 0.2 to 0.6 K/psu. It means that we have to make radiometric measurements with accuracy better than 1K even for the best sensitivity of brightness temperature to SSS. Therefore, in order to retrieve SSS, the measured brightness temperature at the top of atmosphere (TOA) needs to be corrected for many sources of error. One main geophysical source of error comes from atmosphere. Currently, the atmospheric effect at L-band is usually corrected by absorption and emission model, which estimate the radiation absorbed and emitted by atmosphere. However, the radiation scattered by precipitation is neglected in absorption and emission models, which might be significant under heavy precipitation. In this paper, a vector radiative transfer model for coupled atmosphere and ocean systems with a rough surface is developed to simulate the brightness temperature at the TOA under different precipitations. The model is based on the adding-doubling method, which includes oceanic emission and reflection, atmospheric absorption and scattering. For the ocean system with a rough surface, an empirical emission model established by Gabarro and the isotropic Cox-Munk wave model considering shadowing effect are used to simulate the emission and reflection of sea surface. For the atmospheric attenuation, it is divided into two parts: For the rain layer, a Marshall-Palmer distribution is used and the scattering properties of the hydrometeors are calculated by Mie theory (the scattering hydrometeors are assumed to be spherical). For the other atmosphere layers, which are assumed to be clear sky, Liebe's millimeter wave propagation model (MPM93) is used to calculate the absorption coefficients of oxygen, water vapor, and cloud droplets. To simulate the change of brightness temperature caused by different rain rate (0-50 mm/h), we assume a 26-layer precipitation structure corresponding to NCEP FNL data. Our radiative transfer simulations showed that the brightness temperature at TOA can be influenced significantly by the heavy precipitation, the results indicate that the atmospheric attenuation of L-band at incidence angle of 42.5° should be a positive bias, and when rain rate rise up to 50 mm/h, the brightness temperature increases are close to 0.6 K and 0.8 K for horizontally and vertically polarized brightness temperature, respectively. Thus, in the case of heavy precipitation, the current absorption and emission model is not accurate enough to correct atmospheric effect, and a radiative transfer model which considers the effect of radiation scattering should be used.

The East China Sea (ECS) is the 11th largest marginal seas around the world. ECS has widely continental shelf, and has relatively high concentration of suspended particulate matter (TSM) affected by the terrestrial material from the large rivers, including the Changjiang River, and also affected by the resuspension in the winter. Recently, several regional algorithms for the TSM retrieval in the ECS have been proposed, such as the algorithms developed by Zhang et al. (2010) and Han et al. (2006). Due to the variation of the optical properties of TSM, it is significant to study whether existing algorithms are adequate and reliable for the inversion of the concentration of TSM in the ECS for all seasons. Yet, up to now, the validation of the satellite retrieved TSM is still lack due to the insufficient of the in-situ data and the standard TSM product in the ECS. In the past three years, we have carried out four seasonal cruises covering the whole ECS, including the spring cruise from May to June 2011, the summer cruise in August 2009, the autumn cruise from November to December 2010, and the winter cruise from December 2009 to January 2010. In this paper, we firstly analyzed the spatial-temporal distribution of the TSM in the ECS. The results showed that there was remarkable seasonal variation with higher concentration in the winter half year and lower concentration in the summer half year. The concentration of TSM was higher inshore than that of offshore. The isolines were parallel to the shoreline as a whole. There was a turbid water tongue with notably seasonal variation spreading to southeast at the 29°N in the middle of the ECS. Finally, based on the remote sensing reflectance retrieved by the Aqua-MODIS and SeaWiFS data, the performance of the four inversion algorithms of TSM were evaluated using the in-situ measured TSM data in the ECS, including the Clark’s model in the SeaDAS, Zhang’s model, Han’s model and Tassan’s model. The results show that all of the TSM retrieved by the four models have large error as compared with the in-situ data, indicating the strong requirement of the improving the TSM retrieval in the ECS.

The coastal area of East China Sea (ECS) suffers from the harmful algal blooms (HAB) frequently every year in the warm season. The most common causative phytoplankton algal species of HAB in the ECS in recent years are Prorocentrum donghaiense (dinoflagellates), Karenia mikimotoi (dinoflagellates which could produce hemolytic and ichthyotoxins) and Skeletonema costatum (diatom). The discrimination between the dinoflagellates and diatom HAB through ocean color remote sensing approach can add the knowledge of HAB events in ECS and help to the precaution. A series of in-situ measurement consisted of absorption coefficient, total scattering and particulate backscattering coefficient was conducted in the southern coast of Zhejiang Province in May 2009, and the estuary of Changjiang River in August 2009 and December 2010, which encountered two HAB events and a moderate bloom. The Inherent Optical Properties (IOPs) of the bloom waters have significant difference between phytoplankton species in absorption and backscattering properties. The chlorophyll a specific absorption coefficient (a*_phy(λ)) for the bloom patches (chlorophyll a concentration >6mg m^-3) differ greatly from the adjacent normal seawater, with the a*_phy(λ) of bloom water lower than 0.03 m² mg^-1 while the a*_phy(λ) of the adjacent normal seawater is much higher (even up to 0.06 m² mg^-1). Meanwhile, the backscattering coefficients at 6 wavebands (420, 442, 470, 510, 590 and 700nm) are also remarkably lower for bloom waters (<0.01 m^-1) than the normal seawater (> 0.02 m^-1). The backscattering coefficient ratio (Rbp(λ)) is much lower for diatom bloom waters than for dinoflagellates types (0.01079 vs. 0.01227). A discrimination model based on IOPs is established, and several typical dinoflagellates and diatom bloom events including Prorocentrum donghaiense, Karenia mikimotoi and Skeletonema costatum in the ECS are picked out for testing with the MODIS-L2 and L3 ocean color remote sensing products from NASA website. The result proves that the satellite-derived inherent optical properties can be used to HAB detection and the discrimination of HAB species from dinoflagellates and the diatom types in the ECS.

Based on China white paper "China's Space Activities in 2006", the five-year plan (2006-2010) of China earth observation plan, one of them is to form 24 hours, differential-resolution environmental system for stable operation, step by step. In this paper, the status of Chinese environment satellite mission is introduced, including meteorological satellite series, ocean satellite series and disaster satellite series. The update properties of meteorological polar satellite FY-1D, FY-3A, and geostationary satellite FY-2C and FY-2D and ocean satellite of HY-1B as well as HJ constellation of disaster small satellites, which are in orbits for operation, will described in detail. The plan of satellite and their main payloads are discussed. There are three kinds of satellite missions for environmental monitoring in China before 2020, including meteorological satellites (10 satellites), ocean observation satellites (13 satellites) and disaster monitoring satellite constellation (8 satellites). For meteorological satellite series, following FY-2D, FY-2E/F/G are planed to be launched every 2 years from 2010. Following the FY-3A, the FY-3B will be launched in 2010 which are experimental phase). The FY-3C/D/E...(operational phase) are planed, total 9 satellites which will be launched every 2 years from 2013. FY-4 is proposed to have two separate series that are the optics remote sensing series and microwave remote sensing series. For rapid response to national marine environmental protection, development of marine resources, coastal zones survey, management of marine resources, polar study and research etc, China plans to launch HY-1C/D, HY-1E/F and HY-1G/H every two years from 2011, and the HY-2 A/B/C/D and HY-3A/B and CFOSAT are planed to launch. China plans to launch disaster monitoring satellite constellation consisted of two optical satellites and one SAR satellite in coming year, called the "2+1" project, and also another 4 optical satellites and 4 SAR satellites near future ("4+4"). The paper shows that China pays very attention to development of satellites for benefit environment monitoring.

China coastal sea is characteristic of the high concentration of suspended matter which has complex components of mineral particles, organic detritus and phytoplankton, etc. The similarity of spectrum characters of mineral particles and organic particles in backscattering coefficient, and the organic detritus and color dissolve organic matters (CDOM) in absorption coefficient makes the information inverse of coastal ocean color become a very difficult work. In this paper, based on the in situ data of optical investigation in East China Sea in the spring of 2003, including the absorption coefficients of CDOM and de-pigment particles from laboratory spectrophotometer measurement, and the field measurement with ac-9 (WET labs, Inc.), the optical properties of suspended particles were studied. And then, a semi-analysis algorithm of particle attenuation coefficient (Cp) in ECS was developed. There are two key steps in this algorithm, one is the estimation of the ratio of particle backscattering coefficient to the total scattering coefficient; and the other is the retrieval of absorption coefficient of CDOM. With this inversion algorithm of Cp and the input of remote sensing reflectance obtained from the underwater profiler radiometer (Satlantic. Inc.), the particle attenuation coefficient was inversed, which was consistent well with the in situ data of Cp . In the high turbid water, the scattering signal is dominant in the Cp values, so the modeled-Cp was less than the in situ data due to the underestimation of backscattering coefficient in IOPs semi-analysis algorithms. The modeled -Cp at 660nm wavelength has the R² of 0.84 and RMSE=0.22 compared with the attenuation coefficient at 650nm measured by the ac-9, in which the absorption coefficient of CDOM is neglect. The semi-analysis algorithms of Cp developed in this paper showed a good potential to estimate the biogeochemical parameters, like POC, but the further study should be focused on the distinguish of the sub-division materials with more in situ data set.

A Chinese Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CMODIS) on "Shenzhou-3" spaceship was launched on March 25, 2002. CMODIS has 34 channels, with 30 visible and near-infrared channels and 4 infrared channels. The 30 channels are 20nm width with wavelength ranging from 403nm to 1023nm. The radiance calibration of CMODIS was finished in the laboratory measurements before it was launched and the laboratory calibration coefficients were used to calibrate the CMODIS raw data. Since none of on-board radiance absolute calibration devices including internal lamps system and calibration system which is based on solar reflectance and lunar irradiance were installed with the sensor, how about the accuracy of CMODIS-measured radiance is a key question for the remote sensing data processing and ocean applications. A new model was developed as a program to evaluate the accuracy of calibrated radiance measured by CMODIS at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). The program can compute the Rayleigh scattering radiance and aerosol scattering radiance together with the radiance component from the water-leaving radiance to deduce the total radiance at TOA under some similar observation conditions of CMODIS. Both the multiple-scattering effects and atmosphere absorbing effects are taken into account on the radiative transfer model to improve the accuracy of atmospheric scattering radiances. The model was used to deduce the spectral radiances at TOA and compared with the radiances measured by Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) to check the performance of the model, showing that the spectral radiances from the model with small differences from those of SeaWiFS. The spectral radiances of the model can be taken as reference values to evaluate the accuracy of CMODIS calibrated radiance. The relative differences of the two radiances are large from 16% to 300%, especially for CMODIS at the near-infrared channels with more than one time larger than those of the model. It is shown that the calibration coefficients from the laboratory measurements are not reliable and the radiance of CMODIS needs to be recalibrated before the data are used for oceanography applications. The results show that the model is effective in evaluating the CMODIS sensor and easily to be modified to evaluate other kinds of ocean color satellite sensors.
