GPUs have become a key component for most modern PCs. Their wide availability and programmable nature permit exceptional opportunities for acceleration of many common image-processing and machine-vision applications, yet only a few image-processing professionals have yet implemented such algorithms. A brief explanation of GPU design is
followed by application notes and a survey of fundamental algorithms for image processing on GPUs, providing guidance for best practices and future research in this field.
