Konstantin Vodopyanov is a 21st Century Scholar Chair & Professor of Optics at CREOL, the College of Optics & Photonics at Univ. Central Florida, Orlando, USA. Dr. Vodopyanov is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), Optica (former OSA), SPIE – International Society for Optical Engineering, and UK Institute of Physics (IOP). He has > 450 technical publications and is member of program committees for several major laser conferences including CLEO (General Chair in 2010) and Photonics West. His research interests include nonlinear optics, mid-IR and terahertz-wave generation, ultra broadband frequency combs and their spectroscopic and biomedical applications.

SC1012: Coherent Mid-Infrared Sources and Applications
This course explains why the mid-IR spectral range is so important for molecular spectroscopy, standoff sensing, and trace molecular detection. We will regard different approaches for generating coherent light in the mid-IR including solid state lasers, fiber lasers, semiconductor (including quantum cascade) lasers, and laser sources based on nonlinear optical methods. The course will discuss several applications of mid-IR coherent light: spectral recognition of molecules, trace gas sensing, standoff detection, and frequency comb Fourier transform spectroscopy.
