Profile Summary

Michael Alley is the author of The Craft of Scientific Writing (Springer, 1996) and The Craft of Scientific Presentations (Springer, 2003). He teaches scientific writing and speaking at Pennsylvania State University. In addition, he gives numerous professional workshops on these topics to universities, laboratories, companies, and conferences including SPIE. These workshops have occurred (or will soon occur) in the following countries: Canada, Chile, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and the United States. Finally, his team's research on rethinking the design of the presentation slides is featured in an upcoming documentary, Rethinking PowerPoint, by Ron Galloway (www,gallowaytv).

WS668: The Craft of Scientific Writing: A Workshop on Technical Writing
This course provides an overview on writing a scientific paper. The course focuses on the structure, language, and illustration of scientific papers.
WS1124: Research Proposals: Improving Your Odds for Success
This course discusses how you can improve the writing of your research proposals. First, the course looks at the overall approach to writing a research proposal: analysis of audience, purpose, and occasion; and the decision on whether to go or not go. Second, the course analyzes the organization of research proposals. Finally, the course looks at winning strategies.
