Profile Summary

Richard A Black is a biomedical engineer with over 25 years’ experience in the field, and a long-standing interest in the fluid mechanics of the cardiovascular system in health and disease. He graduated BSc (Hons) Engineering Science from the University of Edinburgh, and gained his PhD in Medicine at the University of Liverpool, where he was lecturer in Medical Device Design, and latterly Principal Investigator at the UK Centre for Tissue Engineering. A chartered scientist and engineer, he is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.

Dr Black joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Strathclyde in 2007 as part of a University Research Strategy Initiative to promote research in the fields of In-vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices, Tissue Engineering and Advanced Biomaterials. The Department is host to the UK Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Training Centre in Medical Devices, for which Dr Black is currently its Course Director.

Research Interests
Cellular migration is central to numerous processes such as tissue development, wound healing and tumour metastasis, and is implicated in the failure of many surgical procedures involving the implantation of a biomaterial or medical device. The influence of surface and bulk properties on cell behaviour is of particular interest, as it may offer insights into how responses at the cellular and molecular levels may be controlled.

He is currently exploring the behaviour of cells on biomaterial substrates and in bioreactors with a view to developing novel cell and tissue therapies with application in regenerative medicine. The goal of this research is to develop viable, three-dimensional structures that may one day be used to repair or replace diseased or injured parts of the body.
