SC417: PON Technology in Access Networks
This tutorial focuses on the APON (ATM Passive Optical Networking) networks while discussing/comparing with other available technologies. The requirements for APON FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home) network architecture; transport protocol and operation are introduced in line with FSAN (Full Services Access Network) and ITU G.983 recommendations. Basic network design is set up by using network system elements and fiber plant components. APON FTTH network systems and Outside Plant (OSP) designed from CO to the residential homes is illustrated. There are discussions on APON FTTH system elements, such as OLT/ONT design, lifeline support, optical power budget and operation/fault management. Considerations regarding the design and deployment of OSP components focus on the configuration and construction of the fiber plant. Common issues related to field installations such as trouble shooting of fiber plant through splitter point, drop management, and long term reliability are also discussed.
