This paper reports on the design of a novel optical sensor for distributed measurement of water-content at discrete positions along a single fibre length embedded in low permeability media. Sensing is based on the characteristics of Brillouin scattering in optical fibres coupled with the characteristics of hydrophilic polymers used as transducers. Experiments with a water sensor prototype have demonstrated measurement of water-content up to 30%.Measured losses on the system indicate that mounting of hundreds of sensors over several kilometres of fibre is possible. Experiments involving swelling and drying of the polymers showed that the water-content measurements with the fibre-based sensor are fully reversible.
