Course Instructor
SC031: Fundamentals of Photochemistry and Photodynamic Therapy
This course provides an overview of concepts in light absorption, consequent photochemistry, and application to photodynamic therapy (PDT). An introduction to practical methods of PDT dosimetry will also be discussed. Topics include principles of photosensitization, status of photosensitizers for PDT, photosensitization mechanisms, methods of improving efficacy of PDT, and the role of photosensitizer delivery systems. Dosimetry methods for monitoring the amount of photosensitizer, the amount of light, and the amount of oxygen in a tissue receiving treatment will be explained. Clinical issues will be presented with specific examples of clinical PDT application. Steve Jacques' course on Tissue Optics (SC029) is strongly recommended as background for this course.
