Profile Summary

Currently a post-doctoral research associate working on cardiovascular disease detection in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Research area includes medical imaging system design, modeling and image processing, specifically in thermal imaging, optical coherence tomography, fluorescence imaging, modeling of light and heat transfer in tissue and medical image processing.

Project Experience:
Design of a Combined Fiber-based Two-photon Luminescence (TPL) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) System and an Intravascular Imaging Catheter for Macrophage Detection in Atherosclerotic Plaques. A portable fiber-based TPL-OCT system with high power is designed and currently under instrumentation. Ray trace simulation is performed using Zemax to test macrophage imaging capability of the catheter compared to an ex vivo TPL microscope and to optimize the GRIN lens design in the catheter.

Macrophage and Lipid Detection in Atherosclerotic Plaques Using Gold Nanoparticles and Three Imaging Modalities: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Photothermal Wave (PTW) Imaging and Two-photon Luminescence Microscopy (TPLM). Developed two hybrid imaging systems, PTW-OCT and TPLM-OCT, for atherosclerotic plaque detection. Specifically, PTW-OCT was utilized to visualize plaque-based macrophages and lipid deposits at multiple depths; TPLM-OCT was used to characterize the 3-D distribution of macrophages with respect to plaque surface profile at a higher resolution. The background subtraction algorithm was developed to enhance PTW images.
