SC983: Integration of Optical and Mechanical Design
It is rare to find a person skilled in both optical and optomechanical engineering, which is a growing demand of employers, especially those in small companies and start-ups. This course provides an introduction to an integrated end-to-end approach to the design and engineering of an optical system. It explains the basic principles of starting a design with a theoretical concept and taking the project through the optical system design and analysis, opto-mechanical design, assembly, alignment and packaging. A goal of the course is to introduce the students to the skills necessary to fill the gap between optical and mechanical engineering. It is accomplished by training students how to integrate the optical and mechanical designs on system level. This course is about the manufacturability of the design, which can be described as having the built and assembled system perform as closely as possible to the modeled system. The students will learn the basic ideas of how to integrate the concept of tolerancing of optical and mechanical components into one complete integrated system and how to wrap the optomechanics around the optical components by exporting the optical model into the mechanical design software and performing top level assembly design.
