Dr. Vijayan Asari is a Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Ohio Research Scholars Endowed Chair in Wide Area Surveillance at the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio. He is the director of the Computer Vision and Wide Area Surveillance Laboratory (UD Vision Lab) at UD. Dr Asari received his Bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering from University of Kerala, India in 1978, M Tech and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1984 and 1994 respectively. He joined the National University of Singapore in 1996 as a Research Fellow and led the research team for the development of a vision-guided microrobotic endoscopy system. He joined the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1998 and led the computer vision and image processing related research activities in the Center for High Performance Embedded Systems at NTU. Dr Asari joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA in 2000. He was the founding director of the Computational Intelligence and Machine Vision Laboratory (ODU Vision Lab) at ODU. He received several teaching, research and advising awards while in ODU. Dr Asari joined UD in February 2010. He holds three patents and has published more than 700 research papers, including more than 110 peer-reviewed journal papers. Dr. Asari is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of ACM. His research areas include image processing, computer vision, machine learning and pattern recognition. He managed several research projects sponsored by federal and private agencies. Some of the major research projects include “Face Recognition for Human Identification” by USAMRMC, “Multi-Sensor Electro-Optic Image Based Scene Understanding for Navy Security Automation” by ONR, “Pose and Lighting Invariant Face Detection Algorithm” by CTTSO-TSWG, and “Unmanned Air Systems Navigation and Scene Analysis” by AFRL.
