Volker J. Sorger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the director of the Devices & Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the George Washington University. His research areas include devices & optoelectronics, AI/ML accelerators, mixed-signal ASICs, quantum matter & quantum processors, cryptography. For his work, Dr. Sorger received multiple awards including the Presidential PECASE Award, the AFOSR YIP Award, the Emil Wolf Prize, and the National Academy of Sciences award of the year. Dr. Sorger is an Associate editor for OPTICA and the former editor-in-chief of Nanophotonics. He is a Fellow of Optica (former OSA), a Fellow of SPIE, a Fellow of the German National Academic Foundation, and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is a co-founder of Optelligence Company.

An experimental demonstration of a waveguide-integrated plasmonic slot photodetector based on MoTe2 with 30 GHz 3 dB roll-off bandwidth at telecom wavelength. To overcome the intrinsic low carrier mobility and weak light-matter interaction when applying two-dimensional material for optoelectronic devices, here we numerically and experimentally show a novel concept of the plasmonic slot structure to eliminate the transit time constant (τ=L^2/μV) from the device which is related to the material mobility. The nanometer-wide plasmonic slot offers a ‘squeezed’ mode that allows the 2d material can effectively absorb the light via band-to-band transitions with an overlap factor (Г) increasing more than 3 times compared to the bare waveguide structure. The ultra-narrow slot width reduces the carriers’ drift route to tens of nanometers and is only limited by the RC time constant. The MoTe₂ serves as the semiconducting light-absorbing material with its layer-dependent bandgap that encompasses the standard O-band wavelength for communications (1,260 nm -1,360 nm). The device's static performance under 1 V bias voltage also shows a high photoresponsivity of 0.8 A/W at 1310 nm with a low dark current of 90 nA. Furthermore, we study the slot width-dependent frequency response and static response to validate our concept, which shows that both the frequency and static response are inversely proportional to the slot width. The concept is not restricted to materials and the platform. This may pave the way for developing high-performance optoelectronic devices with materials that have unique optical and electric properties but suffer from low mobilities.^1–13 It has been shown that introducing plasmonic structures, cavities, resonators, or nanoparticles into waveguide-loaded systems can improve light-matter interactions.^14–17 Still, one of their biggest challenges today is the frequency response of TMDCbased devices for telecommunications or information processing.^18–30 For photodetectors using TMDCs as the lightabsorbing medium, this is particularly crucial.

Photonic neural networks (PNN) are a promising alternative to electronic GPUs to perform machine-learning tasks. The PNNs value proposition originates from i) near-zero energy consumption for vector matrix multiplication once trained, ii) 10-100 ps short interconnect delays, iii) weak required optical nonlinearity to be provided via fJ/bit efficient emerging electrooptic devices. Furthermore, photonic integrated circuits (PIC) offer high data bandwidth at low latency, with competitive footprints and synergies to microelectronics architectures such as foundry access. This talk discusses recent advances in photonic neuromorphic networks and provides a vision for photonic information processors. Details include, 1) a comparison of compute performance technologies with respect to compute efficiency (i.e. MAC/J) and compute speed (i.e. MAC/s), 2) a discussion of photonic neurons, i.e. perceptrons, 3) architectural network implementations, 4) a broadcast-and-weight protocol, 5) nonlinear activation functions provided via electro-optic modulation, and 6) experimental demonstrations of early-stage prototypes. The talk will open up answering why neural networks are of interest, and concludes with an application regime of PNN processors which reside in deep-learning, nonlinear optimization, and real-time processing. NASA is working with US industry and academia to develop Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) for: (1) Sensors (2) Analog RF applications (3) Computing and free space communications. The PICs provide reduced size, weight, and power that is critical for space-based systems. We describe recent breakthrough 3D monolithic integration of photonic structures, particularly high-speed graphene-silicon devices on CMOS electronics to create CMOS-compatible highbandwidth transceivers for ultra-low power Terabit-scale optical communications. An integrated graphene electro-optic modulator has been demonstrated with a bandwidth of 30 GHz. Graphene microring modulators are especially attractive for dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) systems. For space-based optical communication and ranging we have demonstrated generating a variable number of channels from a single laser using breadboard components, using a single-sideband carrier-suppressed (SSBCS) modulator driven by an externally-supplied RF tone (arbitrary RF frequency), a tunable optical bandpass filter, and an optical amplifier which are placed in a loop. We developed a Return--to-Zero (RZ) Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) laser transmitter PIC using an InP technology platform that includes a tunable laser, a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA), high-speed Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM), and an electroabsorption (EAM) modulator. A Silicon Nitride (SiN) platform integrated photonic circuit suitable for a spectrally pure chip-scale tunable opto-electronic RF oscillator (OEO) that can operate as a flywheel in high precision optical clock modules, as well as radio astronomy, spectroscopy, and local oscillator in radar and communications systems is needed. We have demonstrated a low noise optical frequency combs generation from a small OEO prototypes containing very low loss (~1 dB) waveguide couplers of various shapes and sizes integrated with an ultrahigh-Q MgF2 resonators. An innovative miniaturized lab-on-a-chip device is being developed to directly monitor astronaut health during missions using ~3 drops of body fluid sample like blood, urine, and potentially other body fluids like saliva, sweat or tears. The first-generation system comprises a miniaturized biosensor based on PICs (including Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser – VCSEL, photodetector and optical filters and biochemical assay that generates a fluorescent optical signal change in response to the target analyte.

The ability to rapidly identify symmetry and anti-symmetry is an essential attribute of intelligence. Symmetry perception is a central process in human vision and may be key to human 3D visualization. While previous work in understanding neuron symmetry perception has concentrated on the neuron as an integrator, here we show how the coincidence detecting property of the spiking neuron can be used to reveal symmetry density in spatial data. We develop a method for synchronizing symmetry-identifying spiking artificial neural networks to enable layering and feedback in the network. We show a method for building a network capable of identifying symmetry density between sets of data and present a digital logic implementation demonstrating an 8x8 leaky-integrate-and-fire (LIF) symmetry detector in a field programmable gate array. Our results show that the efficiencies of spiking neural networks can be harnessed to rapidly identify symmetry in spatial data with applications in image processing, 3D computer vision, and robotics.In conclusion, we have presented a novel algorithm for finding a scalar field representing the symmetry of points in a multi-dimensional space. We have shown how time synchronization in the input values of spiking neural networks, with the appropriate choice of threshold and spike period, results in the identification of output neurons along points of high symmetry density to the network inputs. We have demonstrated an implementation of the symmetry selective LIF neural network in common hardware with a high speed, 2.8 MHz identification of symmetry points in an 8x8 Manhattan metric space. Our results show that utilizing only the delay and coincidence detecting properties of a single layer of neurons in spiking neural networks naturally lead to effective symmetry identification. A greater understanding of symmetry perception in artificial intelligences will lead to systems with more effective pattern visualization, compression, and goal setting processes.
