The high power consumption and the speed improvement hindrance of the electrical Serializer / Deserializer (SerDes) in current optical interconnection are in the way of the optical interconnection development. Depending on the breakthrough of single-chip opto-electrical integration, high-speed transceiver with optical SerDes is proposed in this paper. The proposal employs time-interleaving multiplexing to realize direct conversion between parallel electrical signal and serial optical signal without an intermediary of serial electrical signal. The absence of the electrical SerDes dramatically decreases the power consumption in the data transmission channel. A transceiver working between 20 parallel digital paths at the data rate of 2GHz and one 40GHz serial optical channel is simulated, and the power consumption is only about 13.5pJ/b. The proposal is compatible with various kinds of optical multiplexing technologies, such as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), and quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSM), so the bandwidth can be further improved.
