The data traffic is growing dramatically in recent years, especially in Metro areas. The emerging of Data Networks and Optical Networks presents new challenges of the network design. Here we use the term of Optical Internet as it best represents the integration of the optical layer and data layer in the future networks. This paper describes the network design solutions of Metro Optical Internet. It explains the advantages and disadvantages of Data Over X technology, protection and restoration schemes for Metro Optical Internet Networks and the future smart optical network standard-G.ASON
