Profile Summary

Dr. Shamsul Arafin is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at The Ohio State University. Prior to joining OSU, he worked as a Project Scientist in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), USA. He received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh in 2005 and the M.Sc. degree in Communication Technology from Universität Ulm, Germany, in 2008. He received his Ph.D. degree from Technische Universität München, Walter Schottky Institut Germany in 2012. He then joined the nanophotonics group of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at McGill University as a post-doc fellow. His postdoctoral research at UCLA include heteroepitaxial growth and characterization of GaAs on silicon using two different techniques: (i) nanopatterned substrates and (ii) van der Waals epitaxy. Till now he has authored and coauthored more than 100 papers in leading technical journals and international conferences, including one invited paper presented at the ISLC 2010, Kyoto, Japan. He received the IEEE Photonics Society (formerly LEOS) Best Student Paper Award (Second Place) in 2010, IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship in 2011 and Literaturpreis der ITG 2014 Award in 2014. He has also been nominated for the UCLA Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Research in 2014. He is a member of the IEEE, IEEE Photonics Society, Optical Society of America (OSA) and International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), Die Informationstechnische Gesellschaft im VDE (ITG) and Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC). Currently he is conducting his research in UCSB. His current research interests include Photonic Integrated Circuits.
