Abstract
The advent of `photorealistic' rendering has caused a great increase in the use of discrete texture mapping for image synthesis. Strategies to avoid the introduction of visible artifacts in texture mapping are varied. Most often, texture filtering is at the heart of these strategies. A particularly difficult problem to solve efficiently arises when a filtering operation varies significantly from pixel to pixel because it is often not clear how to perform preprocessing, the cost of which would be amortized over many pixels. We call such filtering operations space- variant filtering. In this paper, we describe a variety of such techniques, and we describe our recent attempts to develop constant-time implementations of space-variant filtering operations.
