Abstract
Two major design issues of a medical and digital picture archiving and communications system are its performance and its standardization. The latter is provided for by standards such as the ACR-NEMA Standard. The performance factor is directly related to the number of nits actually transported. Therefore, transportation of both compressed and uncompressed images within a PACS should be considered. The ACR-NEMA Standard however does not support the use of compressed images. In this paper we present a proposal for an enhancement of the ACR-NEMA Standard by means of which both original and compressed images can be used. This will be exemplified by showing typical implementations of some compression techniques. As compressed images are more vulnerable to transmission errors, the topic of error detection will be dealt with too. The fault detection method used in the ACR-NEMA Standard and other methods will be evaluated on their effectiveness for the transportation of compressed images within a network.
