In this talk, I discuss our recent research efforts on determining fundamental and practical limits to various basic properties of optical materials and metamaterials, including (i) upper bounds on the refractive index of transparent optical materials; (ii) upper bounds on nonlinear susceptibilities; (iii) constraints and performance limitations of time-varying metamaterials. Our findings provide insight into the physical bounds of natural and engineered materials and allow identifying application areas for which there are opportunities for large improvements over the state of the art.
