Three main groups of instruments capable of measuring low-level luminescence are available on the market: tube luminometers, luminescent-plate readers, and imaging devices. They are able to measure luminescence in tubes, multiwell plates, or from an object of irregular shape and size such as Petri dishes, blotting membranes etc., respectively. The application determines the choice of a suitable instrument. Detailed surveys of commercially available instruments for bioluminescent detection are published on a regular basis by Philip Stanley in the journal Luminescence.
