5 October 2012 Electroionization lasers: on the way to gigawat

Abstract
Short historic review of the first experimental research efforts (1969 to 1972) in the fields of high power electroionization gas lasers is presented. Experiments with high-pressure gases (up to 100 atm), demonstrating no principal limitations on volume and density of gas laser media, exited with electroionization method, are discussed. The discussed physics of electric current pumping of high-pressure ionized gas lead to development of mega watt CO2 lasers, multi-kW CO lasers and proposals for development of gig watt lasers. Future applications of such lasers in GW lasing design for cleaning space from cosmic man-made debris are mentioned. Literature based on original publications in these fields is presented.
