Timo Mappes is working as Senior Vice President Innovation for Carl Zeiss Vision.

Timo earned a PhD with great distinction for a dissertation on high resolution X-ray lithography in mechanical engineering from Universität Karlsruhe (TH) in 2006. In 2007 Timo received a grant for an independent junior research group at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He enlarged his group to 9 PhD-students & Postdocs. The performance of his group was evaluated with the mark "extraordinarily successful" in 2010. For half a year he was working as visiting professor at Danish Technical University, DTU, Denmark in 2010. He was invited as professeur invité to the Université de Franche-Comté in Besançon, France in 2011. In late 2011 Timo Mappes defended his Habilitation at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of KIT for the topic "Microsystem Technology". Timo has authored > 190 publications, among those > 50 ISI cited journal papers. His h-index is 19. Together with his colleagues he founded a spin-off company for tunable organic lasers. 2008 - 2011 he was founding chair of the Young Investigator Network (YIN), uniting about 60 independent research group leaders at KIT.

Timo Mappes’ research focuses on realizing and process engineering highly integrated optical lab-on-a-chip systems out of polymers for biophotonic applications. A specialty of his work are the on-chip integration of tunable miniaturized lasers:
(1) DFB lasers based on both, solid-state (organic semiconductors) and liquid core (optofluidics), and
(2) microcavity dye lasers based on a novel process developed in an interdisciplinary collaboration of his group.

In 2012 Timo joined Carl Zeiss AG, working as Director Microscopic Imaging for Corporate Research and Technology until mid 2015. Since August 2015 he is acting as Senior Vice President Innovation at Carl Zeiss Vision. For Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics (KSOP) he is still giving a lecture within the master’s program Optics & Photonics.
