FIRST (Fibered Imager foR a Single Telescope instrument) is an instrument that enables high contrast imaging and spectroscopy, thanks to a unique combination of sparse aperture masking, spatial filtering by single-mode waveguides and cross-dispersion in the visible. In order to increase the instrument’s stability and sensitivity, we have designed and fabricated a 3D laser-written optical chip 5T beam combiner. The multi-aperture beam combiner consists of 5 input waveguides spaced by 250um. Each input is split into 4 waveguides. A pairwise recombination scheme with Yjunctions produces/leads to 10 outputs (127um separation, compatible with commercial V-grooves). In this work, we present the experimental characterization of the chip: transmission performance, polarization issues and single mode spectral range. The targeted single mode spectral range must cover 550-800nm. Different optical powers for laser writing are used to finely tune the ideal single-mode behavior of the waveguides, ranging from 220 to 270mW. A straight waveguide was used as a reference, imprinted close to the first interferometric channel. Using different lasers (635nm, 780nm and 980nm) as well as wideband sources, we have been able to characterize the spectral transmission, the polarization behavior (TE/TM) and the interferometric contrast. The chip was inserted in the FIRST/SUBARU optical bench simulator at LESIA, in order to inject the 5 inputs simultaneously and scan the fringes using 4 independent MEMS, inducing a relative OPD modulation. Preliminary results show very good transmission for such a complex chip: all input channels are above 45% at 635nm (comparing the injected single mode with the sum of the 4 corresponding outputs), with two inputs reaching 80%. A huge advantage of this technology is to avoid the crosstalk due to in-plane waveguide crossings, and we show that no crosstalk is indeed observed. Both polarizations are transmitted, without noticeable birefringence. However, perfect vertical alignment of the outputs is difficult to obtain, and must be optimized prior to any connectorization to fiber bundles.

FIRST (Fibered Imager foR a Single Telescope) is a post-AO instrument module that enables high-contrast imaging and spectroscopy at sub-diffraction limited spatial scales. FIRST achieves this through a unique combination of sparse aperture masking, spatial filtering, pupil remapping Fizeau interferometry, and cross-dispersion in the visible. The telescope pupil is divided into sub-pupils using a honeycomb array of micro-electro-mechanical mirrors, and the light from each sub-pupil injected into a separate single mode fiber that provides spatial filtering. The fibers, which are pathlength-matched to within a few tens of micrometers, reformat the sub-apertures into a linear non-redundant array allowing for the extraction of fringes from each possible baseline as well as wavelength dispersion to create ~130 spectral channels for every baseline combination over the 600-900nm spectral range. In this presentation, we will first report on the latest on-sky results obtained with FIRST. In its current design, the instrument was successfully integrated on the 3-m telescope at Lick Observatory and is now a module of the SCExAO extreme adaptive optics instrument on the 8-m Subaru Telescope. The latest on-sky results obtained from commissioning data show the detection of the stellar companion of the Alpha Equu binary system at an angular separation of 0.6 λ/D (11mas). Even at such a separation, the FIRST data delivers information on the companion spectrum, providing valuable constraints on the stellar parameters of the system such as the effective temperatures. The second part of this presentation will focus on the ongoing instrument upgrades with the aim of increasing the instrument’s stability and sensitivity, thus improving the dynamic range. We initiated a comprehensive upgrade of FIRST’s interferometric components to a new series of photonic on-chip beam combiners and automated optoelectronic delay lines for rapid phasing of each sub-pupil. The new photonic beam combining chips split light from each sub-aperture and combines them to provide a simultaneous measurement of the fringes from every baseline. Another function of the new photonic chips is the inclusion of waveguides in crystalline electro-optic material (Lithium niobate) that enable on-chip active phase control of the light at high speeds (up to kHz). This type of photonic architecture has not been implemented previously for astronomical interferometry of this kind and could potentially provide FIRST with key advantages (see Martin et al., these proceedings). While the beam-combiner output no longer requires non-redundancy, the fiber array that feeds the chip input still requires accurate pathlength-matching to achieve high fringe contrasts. The existing fibers were individually manufactured to ensure identical length. However, while this method was successful, it was not very flexible particularly if any photonic components are added that change the overall fiber length. Thus, another key FIRST upgrade is the use of actively controlled fiber delay lines capable of compensating for up to 100 mm of differential pathlength in each fiber, with sub-micron accuracy. This type of active pathlength control allows FIRST to not only correct for unwanted environmental phase delays, but also makes it entirely reconfigurable regardless of the back-end photonics used.

The new VLTI (Very Large Telescope Interferometer) 1 instrument GRAVITY^{5, 22, 23} is equipped with a fringe tracker¹⁶ able to stabilize the K-band fringes on six baselines at the same time. It has been designed to achieve a performance for average seeing conditions of a residual OPD (Optical Path Difference) lower than ~300 nm with objects brighter than K = 10. The control loop implementing the tracking is composed of a four stage real time computer system compromising: a sensor where the detector pixels are read in and the OPD and GD (Group Delay) are calculated; a controller receiving the computed sensor quantities and producing commands for the piezo actuators; a concentrator which combines both the OPD commands with the real time tip/tilt corrections offloading them to the piezo actuator; and finally a Kalman¹⁵ parameter estimator. This last stage is used to monitor current measurements over a window of few seconds and estimate new values for the main Kalman¹⁵ control loop parameters. The hardware and software implementation of this design runs asynchronously and communicates the four computers for data transfer via the Reflective Memory Network³. With the purpose of improving the performance of the GRAVITY^{5, 23} fringe tracking^{16, 22} control loop, a deviation from the standard asynchronous communication mechanism has been proposed and implemented. This new scheme operates the four independent real time computers involved in the tracking loop synchronously using the Reflective Memory Interrupts² as the coordination signal. This synchronous mechanism had the effect of reducing the total pure delay of the loop from ~3.5 [ms] to ~2.0 [ms] which then translates on a better stabilization of the fringes as the bandwidth of the system is substantially improved. This paper will explain in detail the real time architecture of the fringe tracker in both is synchronous and synchronous implementation. The achieved improvements on reducing the delay via this mechanism will be quantified.
