Additive manufacturing techniques are being extended to refractory metals and other metals capable of operating in high-temperature environments. Many of these metals are high-Z and high density necessitating higher x-ray inspection energies. 3D volumetric X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) has emerged as a strategic inspection choice for these parts. The internal channels and features of these parts are often complicated and can articulate in spiral configurations for longer chord lengths that are difficult to inspect in a single or ensemble of radiographs. In particular, it is the entire 3D structure of the part that is of interest not just one or two locations in the volume. At the same time, 3D printing is extending the spatial resolution limits for small, manufactured details and defects, which impacts the target resolution. CT inspection requirements for these parts include resolution down to 0.1 mm at MeV energies. In this context, properties of the GLO transparent ceramic scintillator (Gd0.3Lu1.6Eu0.1O3): high-stopping power, high-brightness, high transparency in large area plates combined to produce high intrinsic spatial resolution, could be pivotal for delivering 3D inspections of these parts. Radiabeam LLC has configured an area-detector CT camera-scintillator system employing GLO (other scintillators have been used in this system) in combination with the ARCIS LINAC (adjustable from 2-9 MeV). A variety of AM-fabricated refractory metal components have been scanned at 7.8 MeV, providing robust transmitted signal for high density parts with 2-3” chord lengths, in parts that are up to 6 inches in diameter. Lens-coupled X-ray CT using a transparent scintillator imaged on a sCMOS camera obtains higher spatial resolution than the more commonly employed phosphor-enhanced amorphous silicon (A-Si) panels. The result is higher contrast imaging due to increased stopping power. Interior features of the additively manufactured components have been resolved down to a voxel size of 80 microns. Inspection data from this system with representative AM parts will be reviewed and evaluated.

One of the pressing demands in our western society is the safety and maintenance of our nuclear legacy. In Germany the dismantling, safe processing and storage of nuclear waste have resulted in a multi-national research program. One of the findings was that nondestructive testing methods and material selective imaging of compound large objects is possible using thermal and fast neutrons. They also identified that a powerful, safe, and compact neutron source would be required. Since the advent of ultra-intense lasers many applications have been investigated using the unique parameter of laser-driven secondary sources. Recently, we have demonstrated the realization of a short-pulse laser- driven neutron source with beam intensities orders of magnitude above earlier attempts. Those sources can lead to a compact and potentially mobile neutron source with a large number of applications. The neutron source is based on a so-called pitcher-catcher approach, where a short burst of energetic, laser-driven deuteron ions are converted into a short pulse of neutrons in a subsequent converter material. Here, in addition to neutron conversion via (d,n) reactions the breakup of energetic deuterons and a non-thermal pre-compound reaction in the converter material result in a directed beam of neutrons and an increase in neutron numbers compared to earlier attempts. The neutron record number so far were produced using high-contrast, high-energy short pulse lasers of a few hundred femtosecond pulse duration and invoking relativistic transparency in solids as a new ion acceleration mechanism. I will present the underlying mechanism of creating an intense pulsed and highly directed beam of neutrons using ultra-intense lasers and the recent experimental results using laser systems in the US and in Europe. Furthermore, I will focus on a few examples of using such sources for applications that are either important for the security of our countries or will have large economical potential in industrial applications. These range from the remote sensing of illicit nuclear material in cargo to the non-destructive analysis of large civil constructions using compact laser systems. The initial ion pulse that is converted into neutrons is of only a few picosecond duration and thus the neutron burst is generated with sub-nanosecond pulse length. This allows for precise energy resolution of the neutrons using time-of flight techniques. As the ion acceleration is of only a few millimeter in length, replacing ten's to hundred's of meter of conventional acceleration length the source is extremely compact. As the ion beams are extremely intense and do not suffer from space charge deterioration the fast neutron source is capable of point projection imaging with an initial source size of around a millimeter. As the pulse duration is short, high energy resolution can be achieved at a much reduced time-of-flight length offering more compact systems. As future laser systems largely increase not only peak power, but also already offer repetition rates up the kHz applications in research and industry become visible. To fully take advantage of those new sources new detector systems should keep up with enhanced spatial and temporal resolution. Also they need to withstand the unavoidable x-ray flash and electro-magnetic pulse originating from the laser plasma interaction. We have started to explore novel detectors and tested them at high-energy short pulse laser systems for fast and thermal neutron beams.

The detection of neutrons in the presence of gamma-ray fields has important applications in the fields of nuclear physics, homeland security, and medical imaging. Organic scintillators provide several attractive qualities as neutron detection materials including low cost, fast response times, ease of scaling, and the ability to implement pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to discriminate between neutrons and gamma-rays. This talk will focus on amorphous organic scintillators both in plastic form and small-molecule organic glass form. The first section of this talk will describe recent advances and improvements in the performance of PSD-capable plastic scintillators. The primary advances described in regard to modification of the polymer matrix, evaluation of new scintillating dyes, improved fabrication conditions, and implementation of additives which impart superior performance and mechanical properties to PSD-capable plastics as compared to commercially-available plastics and performance comparable to PSD-capable liquids. The second section of this talk will focus on a class of small-molecule organic scintillators based on modified indoles and oligophenylenes which form amorphous glasses as PSD-capable neutron scintillation materials. Though indoles and oligophenylenes have been known for many decades, their PSD properties have not been investigated and their scintillation properties only scantily investigated. Well-developed synthetic methodologies have permitted the synthesis of a library of structural analogs of these compounds as well as the investigation of their scintillation properties. The emission wavelengths of many indoles are in the sensitive region of common photomultiplier tubes, making them appropriate to be used as scintillators in either pure or doped form. Scintillator crystal detectors form the basis for many radiation detection devices. Therefore, a search for high light yield single crystal scintillators with improved energy resolution, large volume, and the potential for low cost, is an ongoing process that has increased in recent years due to a large demand in the area of nuclear isotope identification. Alkaline earth halides, elpasolites and rare earth halides are very interesting because many compositions from these crystal families provide efficient Ce3+/ Eu2+ luminescence, good proportionality and good energy resolution. They also have small band-gap leading to higher light yields. Ce3+and Eu2+ are efficient, and the emission wavelengths in the 350-500 nm region matches well with PMTs and a new generation of Siphotodiodes. In this presentation, we will the present progress made in the crystal growth of these compositions, and scintillator properties of large diameter SrI2:Eu2+ single transparent crystals. The crystals were grown successfully using the vertical Bridgeman technique. Crystals with different diameters of 1”, 1.3”, and 1.5” will be discussed. SrI2:Eu was discovered a half century ago, and was recently found to be an outstanding material for gamma ray-spectroscopy with high light yield, very good non-proportionality, and excellent energy resolution. We will also discuss growth and properties of larger Cs2LiYCl6 (CLYC) crystals. Recently, it has been shown that crystals from the elpasolite family, including CLYC, can be successfully employed for a dual gamma ray and neutron detection, which is possible with the help of pulse shape discrimination (PSD). PSD allows for recognition of an incident particle’s nature based on the shape of the corresponding scintillation pulse. CLYC has the potential to minimize the cost and complexity of dual sensing gamma ray and neutron spectrometers. We also address progress in growth of CLYC crystals with large diameters (1” and 2”) that are transparent and crack free.

Although solid-state lasers have been the primary means by which the physics of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) have been investigated, it was previously thought that solid-state laser technology could not offer adequate efficiencies for an inertial fusion energy (IFE) power plant. Orth and co-workers have recently designed a conceptual IFE power plant, however, with a high efficiency diode-pumped solid-state laser (DPSSL) driver that utilized several recent innovations in laser technology. It was concluded that DPSSLs could offer adequate performance for IFE with reasonable assumptions. This system was based on a novel diode pumped Yb-doped Sr₅(PO₄)₃F(Yb:S-FAP) amplifier. Because this is a relatively new gain medium, a project was established to experimentally validate the diode-pumping and extraction dynamics of this system at the smallest reasonable scale. This paper reports on the initial experimental results of this study. We found the pumping dynamics and extraction cross-sections of Yb:S-FAP crystals to be similar to those previously inferred by purely spectroscopic techniques. The saturation fluence for pumping was measured to be 2.2 J/cm² using three different methods based on either the spatial, temporal, or energy transmission properties of a Yb:S-FAP rod. The small signal gain implies an emission cross section of 6.0 multiplied by 10^-20 cm² that falls within error bars of the previously reported value of 7.3 multiplied by 10^-20 cm², obtained from spectroscopic techniques. Up to 1.7 J/cm³ of stored energy density was achieved in a 6 multiplied by 6 multiplied by 44 mm³ Yb:S-FAP amplifier rod. In a free running configuration diode-pumped slope efficiencies up to 43% were observed with output energies up to approximately 0.5 J per 1 ms pulse from a 3 multiplied by 3 multiplied by 30 mm³ rod. When the rod was mounted in a copper block for cooling, 13 W of average power was produced with power supply limited operation at 70 Hz with 500 microsecond pulses.
